“Starting with Sunflowers: A Klasses with Kateri Showcase”
From van Gogh to Hockney, Monet to Murakami, and many in between, sunflowers have been an artists forever muse. Back in the wild days of Impressionist-era Paris, before Picasso and Pollock, sunflowers became a statement piece for the fledgling masters wielding brush and palette. How an artist painted his sunflower was how he declared his personal artistic style in those days! It is with this same spirit, with this respect for the history of the craft, that the Klasses with Kateri students begin his/her creative journey. Each student, despite skill level or age, begins his/her first art class with Kateri by drawing a sunflower. It is during this first sunflower project that this student finds his/her creative voice, one that is built upon from that day forward with each class.
This showcase documents the transition of the Klasses with Kateri students from their first sunflower drawings to their most recent sunflower-inspired artworks. Whether years mark the difference between this first and most-recent piece, or just a few weeks, this show is an exploration into the creative process as it develops and matures with each individual student. No two students take the same creative path, and yet, each student does start at the same place with the same humble project with the same instructor!
